True invention begins with understanding and caring for others, while great education ignites the desire to change the world.
An Invention Inspired by a Meal
A few months ago, Sam volunteered at a nursing home during the summer break. During his time there, he observed that many elderly individuals were at risk of choking due to swallowing food too quickly. This discovery sparked an idea in him to design a device for individuals who have missing teeth, eat in large bites, lack chewing ability, or are at risk of choking.
His initial concept was a smart feeding device that could actively pace the meal and provide a set amount of food. However, we also discussed how this design might remind people of pet feeders, potentially affecting the user's sense of dignity.
Therefore, I encouraged Sam to return to the nursing home, record videos, and observe the details of the elderly people's eating habits. This would help him further break down the problem and adjust his design approach.

Discoveries from Problem Observation
Through video analysis, we discovered that even when using specially designed small spoons, many elderly individuals still exhibit the behavior of "eating straight from the bowl," taking bite after bite without properly chewing, often swallowing food almost immediately. This situation requires caregivers to constantly monitor the elderly, as even a moment of inattention could result in danger.
First Generation Prototype: "Slow Eating Reminder Device"
By the end of the winter camp, Sam had completed his first prototype — a small device capable of detecting eating rhythm and providing reminders.
🔸 Uses an ultrasonic sensor to determine if eating is occurring
🔸 Provides visual and auditory reminders through a screen and sound to encourage the elderly to slow down and remember to chew.

After the camp ended, Sam didn't stop progressing.
Through tutoring and self-directed learning, he continuously refined his design:
💡 Lighting Reminder System: Uses soft, gradual changes in lighting to prompt slowing down
🔊 Voice Reminder Feature: Plays friendly, encouraging messages
🛑 Mechanical Blocking Structure: Physically controls the eating pace to assist in pacing the meal

With each iteration, Sam would return to the nursing home for testing, making adjustments based on feedback from the elderly individuals and caregivers.
This user-centered design thinking transformed his invention from just a technological product into a gentle form of companionship.
Gold Medal Glory on the International Stage
This year, Sam represented Taiwan at the ITEX × World Youth Invention Exhibition (WYIE) with this creation.
When the judges heard the story behind the device and the real-world problem it addresses, they were deeply moved and impressed. In the end, Sam was awarded the Gold Award, the best testament to his observations, responses, and actions toward the world!
The True Meaning of Education: Igniting the Power to Change the World
As his teacher, what moves me the most is not the gold medal, but the intention behind it:
True invention begins with understanding and caring for others, while great education ignites the desire to change the world.
Sam’s story perfectly embodies the essence of education that we believe in at Curiosity Academy —
Knowledge is just a tool, while creativity and empathy are the true abilities that allow children to shine.
Every piece of work is a testament to Sam’s growth, and it shows us the infinite possibilities of how the younger generation can use technology to spread warmth.
